You cannot know the real rate of unemployment in Mexico. If anyone knew, he would have published the figure with details of how he could he/she estimate the real unemployment %. So people have to go by official estimate of 2.8% in 1998 and 3.2% in 2006. But we do know that there is considerable underemployment, especially in agriculture.which accounts for 18% of the work force. Even if the extent of underemployment in agriculture is as high as 20%, the effective unemployment rate works out to about 5%. Bulk of the employment in Mexico is in the services sector is in the services sector (58%) and services sector employment is not like employment in industry. It would appear that people working in the services sector are not really employed by employers. Most service sector workers are self-employed or work for small business firms outside the organized sector. They may not hold a permanent job. But that does not mean that service sector employment is over-estimated.. So, I would guess that the real unemployment percentage would not be higher than 6% in Mexico now. Most likely, the real unemployment rate is close to 4.5%.
